Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of people in a properly structured, deliberate manner with the intention to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners.
There are five basic elements of communication involved in it which are often expressed as "who is saying, what to whom using what medium with what effects?" The purpose of public speaking can range from simply transmitting information, to motivating people to act, or to simply telling a story. Good orators should be able to change the emotions of their listeners, not just inform them.
It involves delivering information to people who are, waiting to get some information.
Speaking publicly is an art, where the speaker appeals the audience. Best examples of public speakers in society are politicians, religious gurus and college professors. We find plenty of people who are terrified of delivering a speech.
People that will listen to you have something to learn from you. Most of us are thinking of speakers better than us, and fear delivering a speech. It is better that we concentrate on them who would be benefited from our speech, and deliver our best, which will help us overcome the fear within us.
Students who want to take up public speaking as a career need to keep following things in mind prior to delivering a speech:
- Should be thoroughly prepared with the content/topic on which you are going to speak.
- Keep the understanding level of audience in mind.
- Decide what he needs to know.
- What will attract him and make him listen to you.
Be confident in your knowledge and presentation and that will keep you in limelight of your audience. Be calm and be with yourself, walk in confidently, and you will be able to capture the crowd. Start strong, pick up right words of your opening carefully, and trust yourself.
Hope this would be helpful to you in becoming an effective public speaker if you are looking for jobs in public speaking.
